Ask. Seek. Knock.
“And I say to you, ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find;
knock, and it will be opened to you”
Luke 11:9
We may all think of those who need to be asking God, seeking God, and knocking at God’s door, but Jesus’ words are addressed to us too. They are addressed to me too. Jesus calls us to spiritual investigation, and to continue it on our journey to God no matter how much we have or have not already done.
Am I asking?
Sincere questions are always good. They show spiritual thinking. They require that we pause to consider meaning, possibilities, and applications of God’s word to my life. Questions are important. Ask them! Questions should always be welcome.
Am I seeking?
Seeking means looking for something. Spirituality is to be more than just a mental exercise of something done because “we have always done it this way.” We are seekers because we love truth, we want truth, we want answers – and ultimately we want to know God.
At the heart of seeking is what we seek. It is not enough to look for fulfillment of our own desires or to confirm our preconceived ideas. Our goal must not be to please self or others. Paul wrote: “For do I now persuade men, or God? Or do I seek to please men? For If I still pleased men, I would not be a servant of Christ” (Ga 1:10). We need to say, “I want to do what God wants in the way He wants” – then seek what that is from Him.
Am I knocking?
Knocking is active. Knocking puts the initiative in my hands. It sends me out looking for truth and reaching out to do the will of God. Then it means I’m not waiting for someone else to do something, someone else to open – I’m knocking, expressing the desire to come in. We want God to open to us. It means we are ready to accept whatever God wills when that door opens. We don’t wait for opportunity to knock, we go out and create opportunities for knocking and God to open to us.
God offers great blessings, but until I look and go to God as the source of all blessing I won’t find it. Frustrated with the undependable and unfulfilling things you ask for, seek, and knock to be opened to you in life? Go to God asking, seeking, and knocking. You’ll find that He’s there for you! dd
