"Oh, Oh" Moments
It’s kind of cute when a kid gets caught with his hand in the cookie jar when they were told, “No more cookies!” It’s not a serious offense. But you can sometimes see in the child’s face that it’s what I’ll call an “oh, oh moment.” They’ve been caught disobeying. There’s no denying it. And they have to face the consequences.
We have our own, “oh, oh, moments” in life. They tend to be more serious than literally having our hand in the cookie jar like a kid. They may be private, where we do wrong things that no one else knows about but feel the guilt. They may be wrong things someone else sees us do or many others learn about. These things happen, but that’s not why I’m writing about them. I want to think about what we do when they do happen.
Why excusing doesn’t work. First of all, these are moments when we are caught. There is no denying it or trying to explain it isn’t what it is. But ultimately we are always caught when we sin because God sees and knows everything.
“And there is no creature hidden from His sight, but all things are naked and open to the eyes of Him to whom we must give account” Hebrews 4:13
Dealing with “oh, oh moments.” The right way to deal with sin is to repent (a real change of heart) and turn away from sin back to following Jesus (Ac 3:19; 1 Jn 1:9; 2 Co 7:10). Every inclination may be to do something different, but the only way to forgiveness is to have faith in Jesus that He will provide forgiveness for our sins.
“Repent therefore and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, so that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord” Acts 3:19
The final “oh, oh moment.” What made me want to write this is the thought of seeing Jesus, our Lord, Savior and Judge at the final judgment. Looking Jesus in the eye and realizing that He knows everything we have ever thought or done. Everything! It is the final and ultimate, “oh, oh moment!” If we are children of God, following His son in faith, depending on God’s grace and mercy, we have nothing to fear. We have only a wonderful future to look forward to. But if we feel fear of seeing Jesus, that it is going to be a terrible “oh, oh moment” – then something is wrong. What is wrong is our sin that is unforgiven, and we are like that child who, after being caught, fears the consequences. And the consequences of unforgiven sin are terrible. Don’t live fearing being caught, fearing judgment. God send Jesus to bring you peace! dd
